Waiting for the Bus

Every morning, we try to get outside about 2-4 minutes before the bus gets to the house to relax and get ready for the day. I was trying to get Danny's picture this morning and he hunched down like a frog. At first, I didn't want to snap the shot but once I looked at how cute he was, I couldn't resist.

Trying to get these two on the same page is almost next to impossible. When Danny is smiling, Austin isn't and vice versa. Finally, I had to snap something that I was "okay" with. Maybe eventually, I can get them to smile at the same time.

Books, books and more books!

Here are a few books that my book club has been reading over the last couple of months. I have enjoyed each of them so much that I thought I would share with those of you looking for a good book to read.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

I enjoyed this book so much because it is a memoir of things that happened to this woman as she was growing up. Even though it is a true story, some of the things were so remarkable that you have to sit back and say "I can't believe parents would do this to their children!" or "I thought I was a bad parent!". Then other parts of it were like "Oh yeah, I've been there and done that!". To me, it doesn't feel like she is wanting sympathy for what happened to her but that she just wants the account to be told. I would definitely recommend this book.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

This book was excellent from the start! I immediately got drawn in and it kept my attention throughout the whole book. It's an old man's tale of how he used to work for the circus and the things he encountered. But the fun part is that the story drifts from being told when he was 93 years old to the time he was in his twenties. It gives you a different perspective looking into the lives of people in circuses back in the early 1900's. Great book! Definitely recommend it!

Moloka'i by Alan Brennert

I have just began to read this book so I haven't gotten too far but so far, I'm intrigued. I will definitely be updating later once I've finished.

Picture day for Danny, such a sad day for Austin!

Friday was picture day for Danny. He was really excited and to be certain his hair remained perfect, we sprayed it about 7 times with hairspray. We got outside and he couldn't wait to catch the bus. Austin, on the other hand, can't stand that Danny leaves during the day. Once Danny was on the bus and he knew that he had to come back inside the house, he had an emotional breakdown. Poor guy! He can't wait to go to school too.

Danny's a Winner!

We went to the Kidgits event at the mall with our playgroup over the weekend. It was dinosaur themed and they had a really good time. The first line of business was story time where they were trying to teach the kids about dinosaurs. I had a hard time with the kids because they just didn't want to sit still. Finally, I got them busy coloring their "Dinosaur" books and then by the time the story was over, they got to go and get a prize sack, play "Dig for Fossil" game and then wait for the drawing of a T-Rex with baby from Build-a-bear Workshop.

When it came time for the drawing, the staff drew #279. They asked if anyone had it and nobody claimed it. Danny yells "We got it!" and I have to tell them, "No, we don't". We waited about 30 seconds before they drew another number. This time, they drew #233 and I yell "We got it!". Danny was so happy, he could hardly contain himself and for a few hours afterward, kept saying "I'm the winner, I'm the winner!" I was so happy that he won it. I told him it was a great ending to his perfect birthday.

Scrapbooking... Our first time!

The other day at playgroup, we had a scrapbooking playdate. I took pictures for both Danny and Austin to cut and make into a scrapbook page. We had never done this before and it was a lot of fun. Especially getting to do it with friends! I finally had two scrapbook pages to put in my scrapbook that I had received from my sister in 1998... over 10 years ago! It was so much fun that I may have to start scrapbooking. I know, I know. Just what I need, another hobby! All the hobbies I have now I can't get to. Does the "Jack of All Trades, Master to None" come into the picture here? But that's what life is about, right? To live life to the fullest and that's what I'm trying to do.

Danny's 5th Birthday - My baby is growing up!

We just celebrated Danny's 5th birthday this last weekend and I can't believe how much he has grown up. Of course, with him growing up, there is more chance for embarrassment. At his party, when his friends and their parents would arrive, he said "Hey, what did you get me?". I tried to politely tell him that we don't say that and tried to explain why but after a while, I just let him say it. It wasn't worth the fight on his birthday. Another fight we almost had was because he wanted to open the gifts as soon as they were brought in. I explained to him that birthday parties have schedules. First, we play with friends outside. Then, we eat the pizza. Next, we blow out the candles and cut the cake and finally, we open the presents. He seemed to accept that and he went to play with his friends. But every so often, he would ask me "Mom, is it time for the cake yet?". This was because he knew that after the cake, came presents.

My mom came and stayed with us for a few days, which was nice. And my dad, step-mom and nephew got to come to this party so that was nice too. We had a really great day celebrating with everyone and Danny was extremely pleased with his party, which was a year in the making. Last year, after his "Scooby Doo" birthday party, he let me know that his next birthday, he wanted Spiderman. I thought that I would wait and see if he changed his mind but when we got to March and his mind had not changed, I started buying plates, napkins and anything else that was Spiderman themed and on sale. Now, Austin has decided that he too, would like a Spiderman birthday. That is great news because I have left over napkins, plates, tablecloths, decorations, etc.

Here are a few pictures from his party:

This was the following Monday at Danny's school. The teacher allowed us to bring brownies in and we had a mini-party at his school. She gave him a crown to wear, a Bear-y Happy Birthday postcard and a birthday sticker. His friends sang to him "Happy Birthday" and the teacher had a learning session. She had a 4 and 5 on the board and gave each of the kids a little birthday cake sticker with their name on it and asked them to put their name under the 4 column or 5 column depending on their age. Danny is the only one with his name in the 5 column so far. Everyone else is 4.

The little girls at his table were so cute (and the little boys also). The little girls kept asking if I was Danny's mom and if it was his birthday. They even gave me big smiles when I asked them to smile for the camera. I believe they are the same girls that say "Good Morning" to me when Danny catches the bus in the morning. They are so adorable!

Even baby brother Austin got in on the brownie action at Danny's school party. He had a blast! Poor guy, he so wants to go to school with Danny. Every day that the bus comes to get Danny, Austin wants to go with him.

Halloween's coming!

Man, this year is going by so quickly! I can not even believe that Danny will be turning 5 this weekend. Where has the time gone?
Here are a few pics of last years Halloween. We enjoyed it so much and can't wait until this year. The boys have decided that they are going to be Buzz Lightyears (and in their words... "two of um"). I always wanted twins and with them dressing alike a lot of the time, it is hard to tell them apart now. Their hair is almost the same shade and from behind, it takes me a little bit to make sure I'm calling the right one. How fun life has been having two little angels.

Danny's First Day of School

A new era has dawned. Our first child started Pre-K this year. So far, he is enjoying it so much. He gets to ride the bus (even though we are right around the corner from the school), he gets to have lunch and recess as soon as he gets there, and there is only about an hour and a half of learning time. What's not to love?

Here are a few photos and video of his first day of school.
