Stormy Weather

Wow, the wind is a blowin' and the lightning is a popin'! It is cool but also scary and the kids are running around saying "Mom, did you see that?" and "Baba, oh my gosh!".

Right now, it isn't too bad in terms of wetness. We haven't got a whole lot of rain or hail but it is supposed to be on its way.

I have two lightning stories for you. The first one happened when I was just a little girl around 6 or 7 years old. We were from a small rural town in northeast New Mexico and we raised cattle as a source of income. My cow that was given to me by my mom had just had a baby. The cow was a red herford and the calf was blonde and so beautiful. I loved her so much.

A little over a year later, that same blonde calf had grown up into a beautiful cow and had a baby calf of her own that was pure white and gorgeous. About a week after the calf was born, we had a horrible lightning storm. The next day, we went to check on the cows and couldn't find the blonde cow or her white calf. We searched the whole pasture until we came upon an awful sight. The blonde cow had been struck by lightning. Her calf, was sitting right beside her and wouldn't move since that was her mama. We had to take the white calf with us and start bottle feeding her immediately so she wouldn't die. She wasn't eating grass yet, only milk. It was one lightning storm I will never forget for my poor blonde cow and her white baby calf.

The next story happened when Kamal and I moved our family to Texas. We were in the Forest Oaks subdivision looking at homes on North Gadwell when all of a sudden, there was a major bolt of lightning that hit right down the street! The light from the bolt itself was amazing in strength but the sound was horrifying! Danny was walking out the front door (he was only 2 at the time) and when the lightning struck, he turned around screaming and crying and ran back into my arms in the house! It scaried him so badly! We drove down the street on South Gadwell and saw a lot of people outside staring at something. At this point, we didn't know where the lightning had hit but it turned out that it had hit a home! The people were all outside looking at the damage and the smoking part of their roof! How horrible!
